The TikTok bio character limit is 80 characters. TikTok states it in its own Help Center, spaces count toward it, and no setting or account type raises it. For scale: a product link with standard tracking parameters is usually longer than the entire bio.
This guide covers what the 80 characters include, the separate limits on your name and username, why the space runs out so quickly, and how to keep the bio short without leaving anything important off your profile.
TikTok bio character limit: 80 characters, spaces included
TikTok's wording is brief: "Bios cannot exceed 80 characters" (TikTok Help Center). Letters, numbers, spaces and punctuation all count.
The bio is one of three text fields on a profile, and each one has its own cap:
| Field | Limit | How often it can change |
|---|---|---|
| Bio | 80 characters | No published limit |
| Name | 30 characters | Once every 7 days |
| Username | 2 to 24 characters | Once every 30 days |
The name and username figures come from TikTok's articles on changing your nickname and changing your username. A username can contain only letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and it cannot end with a period. Changing it also changes your profile link, so update that link anywhere you have shared it.
TikTok does not document how emoji are counted against the 80. If your bio depends on them, check the final version in the app before you plan around it.
There is one thing the bio field cannot hold at all: a working link. A URL typed into the bio appears as plain text that nobody can tap. Clickable links go into a separate Links field under Edit profile, and that field has its own eligibility rules, covered further down.
Why the TikTok bio limit runs out so fast
Most bios break on the same few items. A second account, a discount code, an email address. Each one is reasonable. Together they crowd out everything else:
IG @namestudio | YT Name Studio | Code SAVE10 | [email protected]
That line is 68 characters. It leaves 12 for saying what the account is actually about.
Links are worse. https://namestudio.com/products/linen-shirt?utm_source=tiktok&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=bio is 96 characters long, so it would not fit even in an otherwise empty bio. And as noted above, it would not be clickable there anyway.
The wording is rarely the problem. The bio is being asked to work as a menu, and 80 characters is not enough room for one.
How to get around the TikTok bio character limit
You cannot make the bio longer, so give it less to do. Two things belong in the 80 characters: what the account is about, and a reason to tap the link. Everything else goes behind that link.
TikTok gives a profile one link. If it points at a single product or a single video, it goes stale the next time you have something new, and anyone who taps it next week lands on the old thing. The link should open a page that holds everything the bio could not: the second account, the discount code and the email address from the example above. That page has no 80-character ceiling.
For what deserves a place on the page, and what to leave off, see the TikTok link in bio guide.
The one-minute fix: bio link
The setup is short:
- Create a TikTok bio link page.
- Replace the random address with a readable one:
linx.ly/namestudiorather thanlinx.ly/x7Kq2. - Move what did not fit in the bio onto the page: other accounts as social icons, the discount code and email address in a text block, products as product cards. The page can also hold a video or a map.
- Publish the page, then add its address in TikTok under Edit profile, next to Links. If there is no Links field, the next section explains why.
The readable address does some work of its own. Viewers see what they are about to open before they tap, and it is short enough to say out loud in a video.
Who can add a link under the TikTok bio
This is where many profiles get stuck. According to TikTok's Help Center, you can add a website link to your profile "if you have at least 1,000 followers, or if you have a Verified Business Account."
A Verified Business Account is different from the blue check mark, and it is no longer a quick switch in settings. TikTok now treats it as business verification: in the app, open Settings and privacy, then Account, then Business verification, and submit your business details and documents. TikTok says approval can take up to 5 business days, and the required documents vary by country. Verified Business Accounts also lose access to the general music library and use only the Commercial Music Library.
If neither condition applies yet, the Links field will not appear. Keep the bio focused in the meantime and leave URLs out of it, because as plain text they only use up characters.
The same Help Center article adds one more restriction: TikTok no longer supports links that open or log people into other social media apps. Links to those platforms' websites still work. The full setup is in how to add a link to your TikTok bio.
Examples that fit the TikTok bio character limit
A bio that works within 80 characters usually has one sentence about the account and one that points to the link. Three examples, with their exact length:
| Account | Bio | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe creator | 15-minute dinners for people who hate washing up. New recipe every Tuesday. | 75 |
| Jewelry shop | Handmade silver rings, shipped in 48 hours. The new drop is at the link below. | 78 |
| Fitness coach | Strength training for busy parents, 3 sessions a week. Book a call below. | 73 |
None of them lists another account, a code or a URL. Those are on the link page. The coach's bio also leaves 7 characters unused, which is fine: a bio earns nothing for reaching exactly 80.
The first sentence carries the most weight. Visitors decide whether to follow based on it, so it should name a specific topic or audience, not a general description like "lifestyle content."
Keep the link page current without editing your bio
Once the bio points to a page, most updates happen on the page. A new product goes on the page. So does a changed email address or this week's video. The bio and the link in your profile stay exactly as they are, so you do not need to open Edit profile every time something changes.
The page also records its own traffic: how many people opened it, where they came from, and their country and device. That shows whether the "link in bio" line in your videos is actually sending people anywhere. If visits stay flat after a video that told viewers to check the link, look at the video and the bio before you change the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the TikTok bio character limit?
80 characters. TikTok's Help Center states that "Bios cannot exceed 80 characters," and spaces count toward the total.
Can I get more than 80 characters in my TikTok bio?
TikTok does not document any way to raise the limit, and it does not depend on account type or follower count. The practical option is to keep the bio short and move the rest to a link page behind the single profile link.
Do spaces and emoji count toward the TikTok bio limit?
Spaces count as characters. TikTok does not publish how emoji are counted, so if you use several, check the final bio in the app.
What are the TikTok name and username limits?
The name can be up to 30 characters and can be changed once every 7 days. The username must be 2 to 24 characters, may contain letters, numbers, underscores and periods, and can be changed once every 30 days.
Why can't I add a link to my TikTok bio?
TikTok shows the Links field only to accounts with at least 1,000 followers or to Verified Business Accounts. Business verification requires submitting business documents, and approval can take up to 5 business days.
How much does this cost?
Linxly starts at $0.99 a month and includes a bio link page, short links with custom slugs, click analytics and QR codes. There is a 7-day free trial, and you can cancel anytime.
